Written 26 y.a., & though I'd quote less Steven Pinker & add other acerbic commentators on the human condition, IMHO the basic thesis remains extant: man is a self-modifying organism propagating even more extremely psychotic versions of his•self, therefore wisdom lies is not growing too comfortable with the veneer of peace.
Two mantras have served me well (when I paid attention). 1. "Follow him who seeks the truth, beware of him who has found it". 2. "Dale, you are not a clever as you think you are". Bona fortuna, Captain.
What a great seesaw of self-awareness your dual mantras provide, —starting with Voltaire's [“Cherish those who seek the truth but beware of those who find it.”], they are much more practical & applicable than Poincarè's extremes [«To doubt everything or to believe everything are two equally convenient solutions.»], —but it is rare to find that blend of humility & curiosity you've expressed so simply.
